Stop, and think! Our mothers have in so many ways impacted our lives. Praises, compliments, gifts, visits, and respects are few of many necessary and deserving honors we owe them. If your mother has gone to be with the Lord, you can live out the legacies she left in your life to her honor. To honor your mother is God’s command. It is an investment with a divine reward.
Mother’s Day is especially great because today, we all have a chance to say or bring some nice things to our mothers. There are many who esteem their mothers lightly, and wait yearly until the Mother’s Day, Christmas or any other special day to give their mothers an appreciative gift. This should not be so. The bible enjoins children to honor their parents. To honor entails paying tribute, giving compliments, showing respect and being careful to give credit. Our parents, particularly, our mothers, deserve our honor, regardless of where they are in life’s journey; be they sick, old or uneducated.
Even on the cross, Jesus Christ, our Mentor, had the care of his mother at heart.Though He was agonizing in harsh pain, knowing that He was about to make the final sacrifice according to His heavenly Father's plan, His last physical concern was to make provision for His mother, He handed her care to John the beloved.
D. L. Moody, the founder of Moody Bible Institute and the greatest religious leader of his day was one preacher who exemplified this honor. It is written of himby REV. J. WILBUR CHAPMAN that“Devotion to his mother was a duty and a privilege second only to devotion to his God…. When at home in Northfield, he never failed to look in upon his mother in her cottage early every morning, to give her a hearty greeting, and to see that she was provided with every comfort and many luxuries. When away, no matter how many times a day he preached, nor how many informal meetings he personally conducted, a letter was posted to his mother at frequent intervals in which she was told at length of the success of the meetings.
