FATHER'S DAY GREETINGS

Posted on Sun, Jun 15, 2008

“By faith Abraham, when he was tried, offered up Isaac: and he that had received the promises offered up his only begotten son, of whom it was said, that in Isaac shall thy seed be called: accounting that God was able to raise him up, even from the dead; from whence also he received him in a figure” Hebrews 11:17-18

Father's Day is generally observed throughout the United States on the third Sunday of June.  Sonora Louise Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington, is credited with originating the idea for a Father's Day observance in 1909. Her inspiration was her own father, William Smart, a Civil War veteran who was widowed when his daughter and five sons were very young. Realizing the difficulties he had in raising them, and desiring to appreciate him for his constant devotion to his family, Mrs. Dodd sparked the crusade to honor all fathers.

It was not until 1966 when President Lyndon Johnson issued a Proclamation that Father's Day be observed on the third Sunday in June. One very important, timely, practical value attached to Father's Day is the provision of an occasion for children to express appreciation of their fathers and for fathers to acknowledge their responsibilities to their children.

On this father’s Day, I urge you to reflect on the faithful sacrifice of Abraham whose willingness to give up his only begotten son prefigures God’s offer of Jesus Christ as an  atonement for the sins of the world.  All such gifts entail love. God’s love for us His children is so mighty. It is strong and complete. Think of how He gave up His only son – Jesus for our sins and filths, and in Jesus, He continuously protects and shields us from all evil.

Even though we are not literally called upon to sacrifice our sons, we are enjoined to love God with all our beings including the sacrifice of all that is dear to us. This is what God’s love for us demands - our best. If we love God, we will obey Him and He will abide in us and generate through us His endless river of mercy, peace and love, which will flow into every home in America and the world, quelling the ever prevalent violent prejudices and hatred where they exist.

We in Christ Disciples International Ministries evoke God’s endless blessings on all Fathers past, and present.
