Resting on the Word of God in an ever-changing world

Posted on Sun, Nov 2, 2008

No contradictory or abnormal situation in this life is a march to the rest and comfort in God’s word. Therefore, come with me to God’s word and see the secret of peace and evidences of encouragement from which you can draw your support. The Word will cause you to lie “down in green pastures” and continuously leads you “beside the still waters”. God’s endless love abounds in the face of conflicting and raging circumstances.

We live in ever-changing world. Ours is a world that shifts with changing fashion. There are discriminating political values, decaying economy, fading and distrustful human relationship, and demoralizing societal norms. There are almost daily reports of unimaginable and heartless domestic murders, friendship betrayals, religious deception, and hypocrisy, disintegrating parent-child relationships, corruption in high places, divorce, fornication and countless ills. These are a departure from God’s original plan and the nuisance of our wayward world. The condition is bad and it is so vividly described by Henry F. Lyte in his song “Abide with me”. He said “earth’s joys grow dim, its glories pass away”. http://www.cyberhymnal.org/htm/a/b/abidewme.htm

Only in Jesus Christ is hope for this fast disintegrating world?  Outside of Jesus Christ, there is no hope because human heart in its corrupt state is in rebellion against God. Thus, the heart, intuitively, likes to do evil. . Jesus said:  For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness: All these evil things come from within, and defile the man. Mark 7:21-23  God Himself regrets about the state of man’s heart.  And GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.” Genesis 6:5

Life’s most contradictory or abnormal situations are no march to the rest and comfort of God’s word. Therefore, come with me to God’s word and see the secret of peace and evidences of encouragement from which you can draw your support. The Word will cause you to lie “down in green pastures” and continuously leads you “beside the still waters”. God’s endless love abounds in the face of conflicting and raging circumstances.

Consider the despondency and discouragement of Joshua after the death of Moses when God passed the mantle of leadership to him. From Egypt to the Promised Land, the story of Israelites’ travel is fraught with instances of obstinacy and disobedience against God and in many occasions, Moses. The results were judgments of deaths.

Joshua had witnessed every bit of these rebellions and was discouraged to lead them.  But in his discouragement, God gave him a secret and a formula for success, which is His antidote for ours today as well: “This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.” Joshua 1:8

There is no known leader in the Old Testament who suffered more that David prior to becoming Israel’s king. He is, often, satirically called “a king in the cave”. In his suffering he drew his strength from God’s word which was “his delight day and night”

Also, remember Job. He was true, blameless, righteous, God fearing, and he distanced himself from all that was wicked. Sadly, he like all of us was not exempt from evil. When trouble struck, Job knew where to turn “Neither have I gone back from the commandment of his lips; I have esteemed the words of his mouth more than my necessary food”. Job 23:12 . God’s word was his meditation, his solace and comfort. Jesus said by the word of God man shall live, and not on bread alone. Therefore, let us read, study, and meditate on the word of God and rest on it daily. This is the secret of our victory. Remain blessed. http://www.cyberhymnal.org/htm/m/y/myfaithh.htm
