The Goodness of Wisdom

Posted on Mon, Feb 16, 2009

Let’s face it. Any one who has wisdom, which is the fear of God will not murder, or steal or do any evil act of inhumanity. Where is the fear of God in prejudice, racism, or hatred? Where is the fear of God in a husband who, in adultery, cheats against his wife and vice versa? Stop and think! Where is the fear of God in an employer who “plays god” and, on impulse, terminates the employment of his employee? Is there the fear of God in the following acts:: sexual immorality, impurity and (wickedness); idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions, envy; drunkenness, and orgies (?)” 3. Clearly, they are condemned by God.

Wisdom is one of a few essential things in this world that anyone who lacks it can easily obtain. It is to be desired and sought after; certainly, much more than silver or gold. With wisdom, we can thrive where others have failed. In wisdom are inert strength and confidence that cannot, without doubt, succumb to fear or threats. With wisdom, we can solidly succeed in human relations. For examples, wives can relate better with their husbands; parents with children; employers with employees, brothers with sisters, and friends with friends. With wisdom, there can be fewer civil or international wars.  Hostilities, hatreds, envies or wickedness, and many more other uncountable evils are effortlessly overcome with wisdom.  Yet only a few people have found this treasure; and wisdom is within our reach.

The bible says that man does not comprehend its worth: “The deep says, 'It is not in me'; the sea says, 'It is not with me.' It cannot be bought with the finest gold, nor can its price be weighed in silver. It cannot be bought with the gold of Ophir, with precious onyx or sapphires. Neither gold nor crystal can compare with it, nor can it be had for jewels of gold. Coral and jasper are not worthy of mention; the price of wisdom is beyond rubies. The topaz of Cush cannot compare with it; it cannot be bought with pure gold.”1

Could not man with so vast and profound education and knowledge, who, for instance, has discovered the electricity, the printing press, the wheel, the penicillin, the telephone and a host of other great things with which life has been made a little comfortable, not able to formulate wisdom, which to me, in comparison is by far more surpassing in worth and importance? The answer is NO! We can not obtain wisdom from learning. It is a gift from God. God understands the way to it and he alone knows where it dwells… And he said to man, 'The fear of the Lord-that is wisdom” 2. Do all men fear God? No!

My friend, stop and think! What a place of serene habitation this world would have been were there to be all around us love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control”4 which, are off-spring of wisdom – the fear of God. Against them, “there is no law”; they are greatly encouraged by God.

Thus, we need wisdom. And God who states that his fear is the beginning of wisdom also says in the bible through Apostle James: If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him. But when he asks, he must believe and not doubt, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind.”5.  Wisdom is good and priceless. If we ask God for it in childlike faith, he will give us. He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all--how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?”6. "So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.”7.  Be blessed.
